What We Do

We put Unity back in the CommUNITY Garden

Our Mission

We believe that GreenSpaces are an important element of every community. Our mission is to create, revitalize, renovate and maintain community gardens in underserved communities. We focus on small spaces, between 1,000 - 10,000 square feet, in urban locations in South Los Angeles. We partner with members of the community before we even begin digging, to ensure that each garden reflects the hopes and dreams of the people who will enjoy it and help us maintain it.

What We Believe

  • Historically, access to GreenSpaces has favored wealthier, and more privileged communities, thus recent focus in urban greening has increasingly focused on environmental justice concerns, and community engagement in the greening process.

  • Urban GreenSpaces are important for revitalizing communities, reducing financial burdens of healthcare and increasing quality of life of those who live there.

  • Psychological benefits of urban GreenSpaces increase with their biodiversity, indicating that 'green' alone is not sufficient; the quality of that green is important as well.

  • The World Health Organization considers urban GreenSpaces a vital component to human health.

  • Perceived general health is higher in communities and neighborhoods with a higher percentage of GreenSpaces in their environments.

  • Urban GreenSpaces access has been shown to be directly related to reductions in the prevalence and severity of chronic diseases resulting from sedentary lifestyles.

  • The distance an individual lives from GreenSpaces and the proportion of land designated as greenspaces have been shown to be inversely related to anxiety/mood disorder treatment counts in the community.

  • Greater access to GreenSpaces has been shown to decrease stress and improve social cohesion.
